Differences In Glock Generations - Confused by all the Glock models? You're not alone, but we're here to help!
The Glock is a state-of-the-art service pistol that is very interesting for a company founded to make cornices. Gaston Glock had no experience in making weapons, but he did have experience in polymer production. He gathered top European firearms experts, produced the Glock 17 in 1982, and the rest is glorious Austrian history.
Differences In Glock Generations
Glock pistols are semi-automatic, polymer-framed, short-recoil, bolt-action, bolt-action. Well, most of them are - the rimfire G44 is a blowback gun and is the only gun that breaks the mold. Glock pistols come in tons of different calibers and in many different sizes. This was not the first polymer-framed pistol, but it was the first highly successful polymer pistol.
Glock 17 Gen 5 Vs. Gen 2
The G17 was the first model produced and was designed to meet the needs of the Austrian military. The special needs of the Austrian military led to the development of the weapon and defined Glock pistols to this day. The Austrian military needed a safe, light, powerful and reliable semi-automatic pistol, and the Glock filled that need.
Glock has a simple way of naming their pistols. Each model gets a number after the letter G, which stands for Glock. The numbers have nothing to do with the gun itself and may seem arbitrary to many - for example, the G45 is not a 45 caliber pistol, it's actually a 9mm.
Numbers are assigned to structures as they are introduced, not in the order in which they are issued. So while the G20 and 21 began development before the 22 and 23, the 22 and 23 were released first.
The G17 hit the streets at a time when handgun safeties were commonplace. Glock's Plastic Fantastics didn't have a manual safety, but that doesn't mean it's unsafe. Glock calls its pistols the Glock Safe Action Pistol which refers to the three built-in safeties.
Glock 19 Gen 4 Vs Gen 5
The trigger safety is that familiar little doohickey that sits in the center of the trigger. Your finger is depressing the trigger when you pull the trigger, so without activating the trigger, the trigger cannot be pulled.
The firing pin guard prevents the firing pin from moving forward when the firing pin is fired. When the trigger is pulled, the trigger pushes the firing pin safety up and out of the way. If you release the trigger before firing, the firing pin safety automatically snaps back into place.
Fall protection is a device that does exactly what you think. Dropping the gun ensures that it cannot fire. When you pull the trigger, the trigger lever lowers the safety and allows the firing pin to be released.
Glock is currently in its fifth generation. New generations arrive as Glock makes changes, both exterior and interior. There is no timeline for when Glock generations end or begin, they are updated as needed.
Glock 17 Vs. Glock 19
The release of a new generation does not mean that the previous generations disappear. Often new and old generations of Glocks are released side by side.
There are also rifles that exist beyond the mentioned generations of Glocks. Some weapons are all over the place and may be missing the generation markers used to determine which generation the weapon belongs to. Some guns are also split generation, which is common between Gen 2 and Gen 3 guns. Glock fans often refer to them as Gen 2.5 guns.
Gen 1 - The first Glocks ever on the market. Plain and simple: these are guns that work. The Gen 1 was built entirely from one pistol, the Glock 17.
Gen 2 – Glock added different sizes and specifications to the Gen 2 models. A metal serial number plate was added, the slide system became a one-piece design, a checkerboard was added to the front and rear of the grip, and the base of the magazine was changed.

Genesis 3 – The third generation is where the rail became a common choice on larger guns rather than smaller ones. The handle has additional finger rests and nuts are cut into the left and right sides of the frame which functioned as thumb rests.
Internal changes included a cross pin above the trigger to reduce pressure on the locking block. The miner also stopped when the room was loaded and acted as a loaded room indicator.
Gen 4 - With the Gen 4, Glock slimmed down the pistol grip a bit and added a custom strap system to change the size of the grip. The grip has also been stiffened and the magazine release has been modified for lefties.
The Gen 4 also included a dual-spring assembly that reduces recoil. Gen 4 also introduced MOS rifles that allowed for easy sight placement.
Gen 5 Glock Vs Gen 4 Glock
Gen 5 - The latest generation of Glocks is the Gen 5. These pistols have seen the removal of the trigger, the magazine well has been upgraded for faster loading, the top cut has been made with a trigger guard for a better grip, and the slide lock is now present. ambidextrous.
In addition, Glock added a new matching barrel to the pistol, and the cross pin above the trigger was also removed.

Glock released the Gen 4 line of pistols in early 2010, which addressed some levels... frame and make small external changes. Almost seven years later, we were introduced to the next generation in the Glock line. The differences in Generation 5 are pretty clear on the surface, but there are some interesting changes that aren't immediately obvious.
I have been using my Gen 5 Glock 19 since the end of August and have put about 4,000 rounds through it since then. I spent it with static accuracy and in strong skin self-defense exercises, and without a light attached to the rail. I also spent time taking it apart and getting to know the internal changes and problems of replacing parts (since Glocks are fun fun tools).
For the most part, the Gen 5 Glock 19 is just a Glock 19, but there are some interesting and unusual changes that warrant investigation. There are also caveats that early buyers should be aware of. I hope to cover most of them here, but keep in mind that this knowledge is based on less than 2 months of use, several times a week. More time can tell more stories.

Glock Gen5: The New Generation
Also note that the photos shown in this article do not show factory new pistols. Instead, these are shots of someone who uses them heavily several days a week. They tend to be a little beat up.
The first and best reason to consider this gun is that it is a Glock 19; Probably the best all-purpose rifle ever made. It is large enough to be a full rifle and offers precision performance and large magazine capacity while being small and light enough for everyday concealed carry.
Additionally, the excellent reliability record offered by Glock pistols cannot be overlooked. In my own experience, I have fired over 100,000 rounds through Gen 3 and Gen 4 Glock pistols, and the only failures I have ever had were from non-Glock parts failing and Cerakote not working properly. With spare parts, the Glock pistol is nearly flawless, even under harsh conditions.
Specific to the 5th generation, you may consider the new Glock 19 for a number of primary reasons. First, the slide lock lever is now double sided. So if you are left handed, switch the mag version to the right and you have a completely left handed gun. For those of you who like Glock pistols but not finger grips, the Gen 5 comes with a flat front grip strap. No customization required.
